Home Sweet Home Realty fundraiser poster

HSH-poster-v3.inddLike most posters, the challenge for this one was to pack in all the information the client wanted to include, while at the same time avoiding the poster being to busy or overwhelming the viewer with too much information. In addition to the poster, I created a table tent for use at the event itself.

Women Composers Festival of Hartford posters

2013 Women Composers Festival of Hartford poster WCF-2014Client: Daniel Morel, Festival Director

There were two challenges with these festival posters: there were a limited number of visual assets available, and a lot of information needed to be included on the poster (the entire festival schedule). I decided to rely on the headline type and background image to generate initial interest, prompting the viewer to (hopefully) move closer to the poster in order to read the schedule and other information.

Kafka book covers

The object of this assignment was to carry a common design theme over a series of book cover designs. My concept was to convey the atmosphere of the three Kafka novels through typographic design: the maze-like confusion of Amerika, the meandering existentialism of The Metamorphosis, and the absolute wall of authority that is the central adversary of The Trial.

An assortment of logo designs

Clients: Pablo’s Coffee, Colorado Scooters, Bridge City Comics, Haunted Happenings

Logos I have done over the years. The Blue Parrot logo was done for a typography class at PNCA, the rest were for real clients. Danger Monkey is a blend of coffee roasted by Pablo’s Coffee in Denver. They had been using a piece of clip art for the coffee bag labels, but when it came time to print some promotional t-shirts they needed an original logo, which they have since used on all manner of merchandise and promotional material, from candy wrappers to animation on their website. They even have it painted on the side of their delivery van.

Promotional material

In 2008 I attended the Pacific Northwest College of Art’s Graphic Novel Intensive, a nine day course on graphic storytelling. After the class I helped form a group of students with an interest in publishing the material we had started in class. In December of that year we self-published INTENSE: Tales from the 2008 PNCA Graphic Novel Intensive, a collection of our work. We promoted the publication at several events in Portland, for which I created a promotional poster and card.

The Frost Giant’s Daughter magazine spread

PNCA student work

For this assignment we were given free reign to design for whatever article we wished, so I chose a short story by one of my favorite authors. The challenge here was to present the somewhat fantastic subject matter with a stronger eye towards design than this sort of material normally receives. The illustrations were taken from Conan: the Frost Giant’s Daughter and Other Stories published by Dark Horse Comics.
